Why DON’T I need my library?
Libraries are the great equalizers. As long as there is inequality and ignorance of any kind - social, racial, economic, gender, and sexual, to name a few - there will be a need for libraries. What other places offer the kind of resources a library does - the variety of programs, workshops, speakers, discussions, audiovisual and written materials, and staff dedicated to education and the spreading of the world’s wealth of information among everyone - without demanding monetary compensation for every visit? I can’t imagine an institution more emblematic of our democratic ideals.
